Woodturning BiographyI began turning wood in 1992 on a Craftsman tube bed lathe, but the seed for the desire to turn was planted much earlier in my life. My grandfather had quite a basement workshop which included a wood lathe. No one would have ever called my grandfather a great wood turner, but the magic of watching the spinning wood had a profound and lasting effect on me. After spending nearly 10 years turning in a vacuum, and being self taught, I decided it was time to get serious about turning and began looking for some type of instruction. I joined the Central Ohio Woodturners, AAW, Ohio Designer Craftsmen, and took classes from Jim Burrowes, Lowell Converse, Andi Wolfe, and several weekend sessions with Stuart Batty, David Ellsworth, and Michael Hosaluk. I turn mainly bowls and hollow vessels concentrating on classic form and proportions to highlight the beauty of the figured wood. On occasion I'll do a piece that includes some type of carving or surface embellishment. Call me a traditionalist or a purist, I believe form to be the most important element of an object.
